Dear Pack 34,

Happy New Year! 2019, Here we come.

NOTE:
The January pack meeting date has been rescheduled to January 23rd at scout hall. Please mark your schedules accordingly.
The January Committee Meeting Has been scheduled for January 7th

Month In Review: December – Cheerfulness and Bobcats

At our December meeting, we talked about Cheerfulness in all it’s various forms. Spreading cheer this month included care for our environment in the form of a beach garbage cleanup at Muir beach.

What a fun event. Thanks to all who   participated, we removed 5 bags of   garbage and debris, including 1 pair of   shoes (big Hit) from the beach that day.   There were fire-starting   lessons, Christmas cookies, Hot   Cocoa, S’mores and even some hot   dog roasting. All in all, a very successful   day!

The Seasonal Cheer didn’t stop there. On December 20th, Pack 34 gathered at the Redwoods to sing Christmas carols during dinner. I think we had over 30 scouts in attendance! The reception was amazing with a dining hall sing-along and many good wishes. Pack 34 went on to roam the halls singing Christmas carols, bringing that Christmas spirit to folks unable to attend dinner. There were lots of people greeting us in the halls and at their doors to join in with the singing and spreading of Holiday cheer. This was such a special event.

We learned at the December pack meeting about the “Rule of 3s”

  • You can survive for 3 Weeks without food
  • You can survive for 3 Days without water
  • You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment
  • You can survive for 3 Minutes without air
  • But you will only survive 3 seconds without…Hope

Finally, We conducted our first Bobcat Court for scouts who completed their Bobcat rank during the fall portion of our Scouting year. Congratulations to all those earning their Bobcat rank. There were 22 recipients! Great Job.

Cubmaster’s Musings

I would like to take a moment to thank you all for the participating in the new changes to our scouting membership. We have endeavored together to transition to co-ed scouting, welcoming female scouts into our ranks for the first time ever. In reflecting back in 2018, I am most proud of this accomplishment. Thank you all for your partnership and fellowship towards that goal.

It hasn’t been easy, this transition has asked us to change some of the ways in which we were comfortable. It has challenged us in how we organize our events. there have been some bumps along the way, and there have been times we have not gotten it totally right. I thank all of you for your patience and understanding, as we work towards balanced adoption of this new policy. Bumps aside, I think that as we continue to navigate these new paths, we have done really well and I think it will bring great strength to our program. BSA Scouting may not be the program for all girls, but for those girls who subscribe to the messages and experiences we offer to youth, I am so proud that we now welcome and offer this program to all who wish to join.

As we asses where we have come from since last summer and evaluate our successes and our shortfalls, It is clear that we will strive to add more female adult leaders to our leadership rank. It is important that we encourage more Moms to join our trained leadership ranks and ask for more assistance in chaperoning our co-ed events. Part of our future events planning must include a YPT2 Trained Female Chaperone to be in attendance. To that end, We are asking that Moms volunteer to take the YPT training course either Online or in an in-person training event. (to be scheduled in the next few weeks) We need Moms to fill this important role as it is vital for our safety initiative. At the end of the day, We would want all parents to be YPT trained so that anyone in attendance can serve as a chaperone. It will offer many layers of safety so that our program will thrive and be safe.

To take the Youth Protection Training (YPT) online, please navigate to https://my.scouting.org/ , log in (or create a myscouting account) and navigate to the YPT training site using the link to the right. If you choose to take the training, please email cubmaster@mvpack34.org when complete so we can record your training in scoutbook.

thank you all very much. Happy New Year

– Alex Mauer, Assistant Cub Master – Pack 34
