Wolves

Saturday, Nov. 17 - Presidential Fitness at 9, Food Drive at 9:30

Dear Wolf Parents,

Great job to all of the Wolf Cubs who participated in the first round of Presidential Fitness trials on Wednesday!

Presidential Fitness Info!

  • boys can keep doing the trials until the Blue & Gold dinner I believe, which is February plenty of time to improve those scores
  • I'm pretty sure we were miss-measuring the pushups all of our boys are already "Presidential" in that category and while I think they could handily beat our Commander-in-Chief (with one hand!), I think we probably need to emphasize form a bit more
  • I've attached the spreadsheet here with their current scores also posted it here
  • Presidential Fitness Guidelines are here. (I'm sorry if that's an old version if I get a new one I'll update you)
  • everyone gets a patch for participating... the National and Presidential levels are nice goals to strive for

Calendar stuff!

  • We will meet at 9AM on Saturday, November 17 at Tam High Track the boys will be able to run the mile (or half-mile) trial for Presidential Fitness
  • Immediately afterwards, at 9:30AM on Saturday, November 17, we'll go to Sycamore Park to gather for our Food Drive pick-up Pete Gilmore already sent out information about this, which I'll repeat, below:

9:30 amWe will meet again at Sycamore Park to set out and collect the food.
Please make sure you cover the entire same area where you distributed the door hangers.
Perhaps each den leader can delegate a driver in their group to follow behind the Scouts as they collect. Maybe a wagon to pull along for each group would be a good idea too.
When done collecting, immediately bring the food to the Scout Hall located on East Blithedale. The Boy Scouts will transfer it to the Food Bank from there.

Again, a parent or guardian must accompany each scout. Please be courteous to anyone you may meet along the way. Please wear your scout uniforms and feel free to enlist the support of your friends and families.

Hope to see you Saturday! No need to RSVP!

Best,

Dave

Wolf Update

Hey everybody,

If you're on Will Cannell's mailing list, you probably saw the attached message. Otherwise no worries, and at the risk of some redundancy, I'll continue to forward them. (Will's email is willcannell at yahoo dot com, in case you want to ask him to add your email to his list.)

A few updates:

GREAT participation at the Planet, where the Cubs nailed their Woodworking Achievement (pun intended this time, too) by making surfboards, rockets, and, yes, knives (the kind King Tutankhamun was buried with, we were told, so it's okay): Ed Gilmore, Sawyer Shine, Connor Cardinal, Derek Jennings, Ben Daley, Max Johnson, Jordan Baldwin, John Luster, and Jonny LaDuke.

REALLY GOOD (considering the late announcement) but not quite at the level of GREAT participation at the Scouting for Food drop-off event on Saturday: Ed Gilmore, Miles Rubens, Franklin Colburn, and Jonny LaDuke.

Future events:

See you on Wednesday at Scout Hall, 7PM - we'll kick off Presidential Fitness! Update the Wolf achievement spreadsheet at  http://www.mvpack34.org/files/wolf_den_07-08.xls so that I can honor your Cub appropriately.

And see you again on Saturday, November 17th at 9:30AM at Sycamore Park, where we'll rally to pick up the food. Jacqueline Colburn has volunteered to shadow us with her SUV so we can load food into it as we collect it. I can do the same. We should be good.

Best,

Dave

Wolves

November 7th Den Meeting at The Planet! And more...

Dear Wolf Parents,

It's time to plan some activities for our Wolf cubs!

Here is what you need to know - but before I get to the details let me explain my philosophy.

My philosophy is simple: lets have fun!

Here is a more elaborate version: lets have fun! - kids and parents - and lets not stress out about achievements, meetings, calendars, schedules and the whole mess. As the scout motto says, "Do your best." We're all doing that, so no worries if you can't make this or that meeting, or your scout needs to take a break.

Now to the details:

Bobcat Trail: every scout needs to complete this before becoming a Wolf. As far as I know, all of the cubs who were with us last year are done with this. New cubs can get it done in about twenty minutes (see pages 18-27 in the Wolf book).

Wolf Gear: I still have plenty of it: hats ($12.98), neckerchief ($5.40), neckerchief slides ($2.70), and books ($14.06)... I'll bring them to our next meeting for anyone interested in purchasing.

Den Meeting: Wednesday, November 7th at 4:30 to 6:00 PM at THE PLANET at 220 Redwood Hwy (near the pumpkin patch, outdoor teak furniture showroom, and heilcopter landing pad). The reason for meeting there is so that we can nail (pun intended) the Woodworking Achievement (#5, page 64-73). The boys will learn the basic tools, how to use pliers, a screwdriver and a hammer (though not all at once), and build either bookshelves, a keychain rack, or some other simple project that can be completed in an hour.

Required Wolf Achievements: Going forward, I think we can get all 12 Wolf Achievements accomplished quite easily (pages 38-101 in the Wolf Book). Here's what I suggest:

1 - Feats of Skill - we can combine this with Presidential Fitness trials later in the year
2 - Flags - we'll do this at a Pack meeting - each Den gets a turn to lead the flag ceremony, our turn is December 12th
3 - Healthy body - Den meeting - we can do this before the Scouting for Food drop-off on November 10th (more details, soon)
4 - Home & community - Den meeting - we can do this before the Scouting for Food pick-up on November 17th
5 - Woodworking - at the Planet - see above
6 - Collection - Den meeting - Tom Baldwin has volunteered to do this - so expect a message from him at some point
7 - Your living world - Den meeting - to be scheduled - Rob may organize for December
8 - Cooking and eating - do that with your family - food pyramid is covered anyway in school
9 - Safety at home and on the street - do with your family
10- Family fun - do with your family
11 - Duty to God - do with your family
12 - Choices - Den meeting - to be scheduled

Optional Wolf Electives: While working on achievements, Cubs can also complete Arrow Point Electives (pages 103-219 in the Wolf Book). I think there are about 130 possible electives. Wolves get a Gold Arrow Point after the first 10 electives, and a Silver Arrow Point for every 10 thereafter. In theory, a Wolf could earn 1 Gold and 12 Silver Arrow Points, but that's not necessary or practical. That said, when the kids graduate from Cubs and get their Arrow of Light, we will paint gold and silver stripes to designate the Arrow Points they earn now.

Keeping track of all this: please use the spreadsheet attached - it's also posted here: . Enter your cub's achievements and electives in the appropriate sheets and everything will be tallied automagically. Send me the spreadsheet (to this email) when you have updates.

Thanks everybody! Remember to RSVP for the Planet Woodworking Event on November 7th! And to have fun!

Best,

Dave

Wolf Cubs - Pack Meeting Wednesday, October 10

Hey Wolf Parents,

We have our monthly Pack 34 meeting this Wednesday night, October 10, 7PM - Scout Hall. I look forward to seeing all of you and your Wolf cubs there!

We have a great Den! There are about a dozen boys - and we may have a few more joining. Here's the current roster:

  • Ben Lightner
  • Benjamin Daly
  • Casey Murray
  • Derek Jennings
  • Edward Gilmore
  • Franklin Colburn (might be joining)
  • John Luster
  • Jonny LaDuke
  • Jordan Baldwin
  • Luca Pelo
  • Miles Rubens
  • Sawyer Shine

You may have heard the great news that Rob Luster (John's dad) will be co-leading our Den with me. Rob will help me keep track of all these Wolves!

I plan to go to the Scout Store on Wednesday to pick up books, hats, neckerchiefs, and other lupine accoutrements. Let me know if you already have stuff.

Please bring your checkbook to the meeting, both to pay for the above, and for dues. Annual dues are $80 (I realize that some of you have already paid).

At the Pack Meeting on Wednesday, Rob and I will give out a lot of patches: Tiger, Bobcat, 9/11 Flag-raising, White Water Rafting, Memorial Day Parade, Day Camp, and Recruiting. Whew! I've ordered lots of patches so hopefully we'll have enough for everyone.

To track our Cubs accomplishments, I've set up this spreadsheet: http://www.mvpack34.org/files/wolfden07-08.xls. Update and email back to me anytime, and I'll update the master.

Also, I'm putting all of these emails up on our Web site at http://www.mvpack34.org under the Wolf tab. Hopefully that will make it easy for you to find stuff.

I would like to plan a meeting this fall so that we can complete several Wolf accomplishments (which you'll be able to see in the Wolf book when I get it to you). Perhaps we can meet at the Planet and make birdhouses. We have lots of other fun activities coming up, including a campout, a hike, Scouting for Food, and more!

See you Wednesday!

Dave
