Message to Webelos from Mike Burkett, Scoutmaster, Troop 1 (courtesy of Tish Rosales):
Here is the advancement plan that Troop 1 finds works very well for new scouts.
1) Attend Summer Camp 8-Jul through 14-Jul:
-Earn the Swimming and 1st Aid Merit Badges
-Attend Trail to First Class at summer camp
-Have fun
- Make a 1st Aid Kit when they return home to complete the 1st Aid Merit Badge
2) When the scout returns from camp they are able to earn sign-off on all Swimming and First Aid requirements for:
-Tenderfoot
-2nd Class
-1st Class(note they still need to make a 1st aid kit).
3) Attend Traditional Campouts in the Fall to earn:
-cooking requirements
-pioneering
-identify 10 plants and animals
-etc.
The scouts are then well on their way to becoming a 1st Class Scout by this time next year. If some of the scouts just want to have fun and advance a a slower pace that also works. Some scouts take it easy for a while and advance quickly later on.
Parents are always welcome to attend Marin Sierra Camp and/or our campouts.
I look forward to having all of the Webelos attend our troop meetings at 7:30pm on Thursdays at Scout Hall, Mill Valley. You have a great group of scouts!
Best regards,
Mike Burkett
Troop 1 Scoutmaster

Pack 34 Webelos II and Parents:
We hope all the 2nd year Webelos from Pack 34 are considering bridging into Mill Valley Boy Scout Troop One. Our bridging is on Thursday, April 26.
We encourage you to visit Troop One for at least one Thursday night meeting. Our Troop meetings are 7:30 to 9:00 at Scout Hall.
This Thursday, March 22, the Pack One Webelos II will be visiting. If you would like to meet some other potential new Scouts please come. If another Thursday works better, please let me know so we can be ready to answer any questions you may have.
We will be having meetings March 29, April 5, and April 19. We will not have a meeting April 12 due to Spring Break for the Mill Valley Schools.
Prior to bridging, we will have a packet of information for you including the application form. We can mail these to you if you provide your address at the meeting or forward your address by e-mail.
Please do not hesitate to call myself or any of the Pack One leaders if you have any questions. We look forward to welcoming you to Troop One

Hi Everybody,

Joe asked me to set up a Den 007 meeting at Round Table on Wednesday January 25th at 6PM. Unfortunately the private room is booked up well in advance, so we'll have to snag some tables in the back if we can.
The point of the meeting is to tackle as many Achievements as we can before the Blue & Gold Dinner.
I wasn't able to attend the last one, so I'll focus on the Achievements I signed up for previously: Citizenry, Puppetry, Artist (it's kind of random, I'll admit).
If there are other Achievements cub parents would like to sign up for, that would be great.
Also, it would be good if any of the cubs who want a do-over on their National/Presidential Fitness tests could tackle them before the pizza starts flowing. (That seems to send a mixed message. Ah, well, I don't think Whole Foods would welcome us.)
Be there with your Cub!
Best,
Dave
The Webelos had a rockin' good time in the Woods, at the Marin Boy Scout Camp in the Sierras. They camped, swam, shot arrows, shot bb guns, tied knots, whittled, hiked, observed nature, fished, put on extremely surrealistic skits, and generally had a blast!
Check out these photos from Dave Lundgren.
After that, you are off and runnin.
Thanks, Kerry
RE: Webelos Woods 2005
Theme: Back to Baden Powell
Dear Webelos Woods Participant:
Webelos Woods starts on Friday evening, July 8. Please arrive at camp Marin-Sierra between 5:30pm and 7:30pm Try not to arrive any earlier than this, as there will be no staff available to accommodate you. Dinner will be served on Friday night, so you will need to eat before you arrive. There are many restaurants and fast food outlets at the Foresthills exit in Auburn.
To get to camp Marin-Sierra, take 1-80 east about 2.5 hours until you get to Highway 20. This is the Nevada City turnoff, which is roughly 45 minutes past Auburn. The Highway 20 exit comes up suddenly behind a large boulder, so be prepared to exit once you see the sign. Turn right, and follow Highway 20 under the freeway. The camp is located approximately 3/4 mile down Highway 20 on the right hand side. We will be camping approximately 1/4 mile from the parking lot, and you will need to carry your gear. Although backpacks are not necessary, they are helpful if you already own them. The camp will furnish tents, but you are free to bring your own tent if you wish.
Please check in at Ibach lodge next to the parking lot as soon as you arrive. You will need to turn in a completed Class 1 medical history form for both you and your scout. If you arrive late, check the bulletin board next to the main doors at Ibach lodge for instructions. We are tentatively assigned to the 49'er campsites.
There will be a campfire program at 8 p.m. on Friday night, put on by the Marin-Sierra Scout staff. At this time we-will be making any last-minute announcements, and handing out the finalized patrol rosters and schedules. For Friday night's campfire the dress will be the Class 'A' uniform, which is the either the Blue and Gold or Olive Webelos shirts and neckerchiefs. For the remainder of the weekend the uniform of the day will be activity shirts, which will be distributed upon check-in.
The brochure for Webelos Woods contained a list of things to bring to camp. You can find another list in the Outdoorsman badge section of the Webelos Handbook. You do not need to bring food, however you will need to bring your own mess kits. If you do not already, own mess kits, just bring an old set of eating utensils, plates, bowls and cups. You should also bring a canteen or water bottle. Please call to let us know if there are any dietary concerns we need to know about, such as Vegan meals or food allergies. If there is a need to bring special food, there will be room to store it ,in the commissary's refrigerator. Storing food in the campsites is not permitted.
Saturday night we will prepare our meals at our campsites, then relax with a campfire program, also at our campsites. Please be prepared by bringing along your favorite skit, song, or story to share.
With a little preparation before camp your Webelos Scout can complete the Traveler activity pin during the trip to and from camp. The complete requirements are in the Webelos Handbook. In general, your Webelos Scout will need to help in the planning and preparation of your trip to Camp Marin-Sierra. To satisfy requirement number one, you can use Greyhound Bus timetables (available on the Internet) to compare the length and cost of traveling by bus to a nearby town (Truckee, for example) versus traveling by car.
We will be able to swim in Chubb Lake on Saturday, so bring a bathing suit and towel. During that swimming session, Webelos will be able to satisfy most of the requirements for the Aquanaut activity pin. Bring some water socks or flip-flops to protect your feet while at the waterfront. By learning some of the basic camping knots and participating in the various activities, Webelos will be able to fulfill all of the requirements for the Outdoorsman activity pin.
While your Webelos will have opportunities to advance, our main interest is that we all have fun! There will be many things to do, including BB guns, archery, swimming, camping skills, nature, games, and much more. We will pack and leave camp after the Scout-own service on Sunday morning. If you have an acoustic guitar or wish to do a special reading, please bring the appropriate material.
While at Marin-Sierra, Scouts are asked to leave any electronic gear behind. Electronic games, portable radios, TVs and such should be left at home or in your vehicle.
Everyone involved in planning Webelos Woods is looking forward to a great weekend in the Sierras.
Sincerely,
Ron Poggi
Webelos Woods Director

Saturday, May 28th, 9 a.m. -- Flag Planting, San Francisco National Cemetery (Presidio)
Monday, May 30th, TBA -- Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade
Hey Webelos! (I like the sound of that!)
Two great events are scheduled over Memorial Day weekend. Saturday's Flag Planting is one of our most meaningful scouting events. As you probably remember, the National Cemetery covered with American flags truly makes us feel we are on hallowed ground. It is a moving experience that scouts and their parents can share together.
On Monday, we get to ride our razors or scooters in the well-orchestrated (just kidding) MV parade. Scouts, in uniform, should bring their scooters and a bag of candy they can pummel (I mean share with) the crowd. The pack needs two families to bring their wagons filled with water bottles for the scouts; some years have been pretty hot.
These two events are great scout traditions that you don't want to miss. Please call me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Israel
FYI, they are only taking 48 kids this year for Webelos Woods, first come first served.
I sent my application today.
If you or others in your dens are going, I would send in this week to secure a spot. This is a great event.
Bear and Web den leaders, please remind your parents.
The application is on the Marin Boy Scouts Website, or here.
Kerry
Current Bears and Webelo 1,
This is a Webelos only event. So, the current Bears that bridge to Webelos are eligible.
NO siblings on this trip.
Webelos Woods is coming up on July 8-10 at Marin Sierra at Tahoe. I went with Mac two years ago, it is awesome. I am taking Sammy this year.
This is intended to be a father-son (or a mother-son) trip. Not many moms went last time (I remember one).
In addition to having a great time fishing, swimming, boating,....each boy will also knock out some key achievements.
There is more information here. When you click on Webelos Woods, you will get the sign up sheet.
Howdy, Webelos
Fortune, so far, is smiling on us for our Brodkin family-sponsored Astronomy Night & cookout, this Saturday, 6:30PM at China Camp Backranch Meadows. Fine weather and a full Den roster seem very likely to be ours. Thanks to those who have volunteered to bring food for dinner & snacks afterwards.
To ensure a zero-stress rendezvous, please see the attached directions sheet in .pdf form. The .pdf is 2 pages, and on the 2nd page, I have consolidated the details of Scout Basics for our Webelos to learn for Bridging in May, and earning their Webelos Badge. Feel free to mine these details from the rich & varied ore of the Webelos book, but this will make them more accessible. I'll bring hardcopy, and our Webelos can quiz each other while we wait for the sun to sink beneath the hills, and the stars to wink on.
