We're marching/scootering en masse with all MV Cub Scouts.

Wednesday, June 6 7 PM Bridging Pool Party at Homestead Valley Pool
This is our end of the year blowout.

The club opens its pier (north of Richmond SR Bridge) to all Marin cub scouts for fishing.

To be scheduled: Garden of Savage Delights - Carnivorous Plant Show at Golden Gate Park
I saw this in the paper: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/05/04/BAG79PL5F91.DTL
We gotta go! I haven't figured out a date yet, but I will. Maybe something fun for a summer weekend.

See you on Wednesday!

Best,

Dave

Tiger Cubs Pack 34 Fire House Visit

Marianne Shine writes:

We had a great visit today at the Fire Station. First of all I would like to thank the parents who helped out with driving and bringing drinks, Lisa Baldwin, Tina Jennings, Mary Anne Daly and Claudine Murray for a fabulous snack complete with fire house stickers and pencils.
P3230038

When we got to the station the trucks were gone. Turns out the fire fighters were putting out a car fire. So Tina walked us over to the bank where she works and taught the Cubs about banking. They also managed to sell a few See's candy bars in the process. Way to go with picking up the financial skills.

P3230039

Then it was back over to the fire station where Captain Mike St John and Rodriguez where hot and sweaty from their rescue still wearing their "turn out" gear. They showed us two different trucks. They even hooked one of the scouts up to an EKG machine for a demonstration on heart rates and first aid. The visit ended with a rope and pulley demonstration. This was a terrific and educational outing for all. We really missed you guys that had other commitments. Catch ya next time.

Upcoming Tiger Events

Tiger parents,

Upcoming Tiger Dates:

***March 23, 3:30PM: Tiger Cub firehouse visit is this Friday - Marianne Shine is making it happen!

March 24, 12PM: Candy Sales

March 28, 7PM at Mill Valley Golf Course: Pack Meeting, Awards, and Arrow of Light Ceremony

***April 27th, 4:30PM at Tam High: Baseball Game - Tom Baldwin is making it happen!

(Events marked with *** are part of the required "Go See It" achievements.

Also, a brief update on candy sales....

Wow! We have some natural born Tiger salesmen in our den. Jordan, Derek and Jonny held their own last week in front of Mill Valley Market - alongside girl scouts selling cookies and a bakery giving away free samples. (The person operating the bakery stand wound up buying three chocolate bars.)

All three boys sold out!

It was great to see the boys in action, zeroing in on prospects, blocking the entrance to Mill Valley Market, sharpening used-car-salesmen pressure tactics... kind of like a pint-sized Glengarry Glen Ross... hey... just kidding!

Seriously, I was reminded what a really great activity this is. The boys learned how to make eye contact, speak to adults, make change, handle rejection without getting upset, experience generosity and thank people for it - they were great.

Next week we are stationed at Safeway on Camino Alto/Miller at 12PM, after the Little League Parade. Please consider bringing your Tiger - but be sure to get candy from Will or Steph - we're running out. Also, let me know if you're coming.

Remember - 3 boxes, and the boy earns a fishing rod & reel. Jordan, Derek & Jonny are on their way...

Best,

Dave

Cub Scout Saturday

Tiger Team,

Lots going on this Saturday. Come to one or all events!

- Blue and Gold Dinner Saturday, Feb 3 at 6PM at Scout Hall is the Blue & Gold Dinner. This event is catered. It is a lot of fun! Please rsvp to rsvp@mvpack34.org. At the dinner we'll hand out pinewood derby cars and See's chocolate bars. The latter are for candy sales (see below).

- Bus stop cleaning - Saturday, Feb 3 at 2PM meet at the bus stop at Miller and Montford Avenue, in front of Taco Joes. Bring Latex gloves, Sponges, Windex, Simple Green, Paper towels, Water, Buckets. We'll have it looking spic & span by 3PM. Boys get patches for this effort.

- Cake baking contest - We need an entry for the cake baking contest. Any bakers willing to step forward? If we could get a blank cake to the bus stop, with frosting and decorations, the boys could work on it after finishing work at the bus stop. The cake will be dessert at the Blue & Gold dinner.

- Skit - at the bus stop we can get the kids to brainstorm on the skit, which will be performed at the Blue & Gold dinner. I propose the theme "Bigfoot Chase".

- Presidential fitness - Saturday, Feb 3 at 10AM we will have a last-minute Presidential fitness meet. Please bring your cub! Current fitness results are here: <http://www.mvpack34.org/files/tiger_presfitness06.xls> Even if your cub only does one event, they get a participant patch.

- Candy sales - we will be selling the chocolate bars in front of one of Mill Valley's popular shopping destinations (TBD) on Saturday, Feb 10. This takes an our or two and I've found it to be very educational - much more so that I thought before actually doing it. More details at the Blue and Gold Dinner!

That's about it. I hope to see all of you on Saturday.

Best,

Dave

Blue and Gold, Bus Stop Cleaning, and Presidential Fitness

Hello Tiger Parents,

Mark your calendars:

Saturday, February 3rd at 2PM - bus stop cleaning - exact bus stop to be determined. This will take about an hour, and is part of our community service. I'll let you know when I know which bus stop we're cleaning. Bring old rags, buckets, green cleaner, rubber gloves.

Saturday, February 3rd at 6PM - Blue and Gold Dinner for parents and cubs at Scout Hall. This is a very nice, catered event, where we will recognize the boy's achievements. This year the event is under the expert direction of Barb Sobel - thanks Barb!

A couple of points about the Blue and Gold Dinner:

Skit - we are supposed to put on a skit for entertainment at the Blue and Gold Dinner. Usually these are made up on the spot and are pretty hilarious. I suggest the following theme: "Bigfoot chase". Maybe we can work out some details at the bus stop cleaning.

Cake - each den traditionally bakes and decorates a cake for the Blue and Gold Dinner. Would a mom be willing to bake a basic cake, and bring frosting/decorations so that the boys can do this at or after the bus stop cleaning?

Candy Sales - at the Blue and Gold Dinner you can purchase candy bars. We'll be selling those the weekend of February 10th, location TBD. This is a great activity that teaches basic salesmanship, professionalism and economics (i.e. making change) to the scouts.

Presidential Fitness Achievements - current fitness results are here: <http://www.mvpack34.org/files/tiger_presfitness06.xls> Please update me with any additional scores. Presidential Fitness patches will be handed out at the Blue and Gold dinner. Every boy gets a patch for participating.

Overall Tiger Cub Achievements - current achievements are here: <http://www.mvpack34.org/files/tiger_den_2006.xls>. Please update me with any additional achievements, and I'll get patches for the boys.

As always, you can find all of this information on the Tiger tab of the scout web site: <http://www.mvpack34.org>

Yours in Scouting,

Dave

    Tigers

Tiger Den Meeting November 27, Tiger Achievements

    Tiger Parents,

I've enjoyed meeting your boys, and believe we have a great Tiger Den! For those of you who are new to scouting, each year your cub will complete a series of achievements. Cubs are rewarded and recognized at the Pack Meetings. Tiger achievements are not difficult, they're fun things to do with your cub, and they provide both quality time together and learning opportunities.

I'd like to set up our first Den Meeting on Monday, November 27th so that we can get to work on these achievements. More on that in a bit.

But first, the Tiger book is a bit confusing about achievements, so here is my pass at making things a bit easier to understand.

    ***ACHIEVEMENTS***

    1: Tiger Cub Belt Totem

First, the Tigers earn a belt totem - see pages 19-20 of the Tiger book. To earn the totem, all they need to do is:

1 Learn the Tiger motto (it's three words!)
2 Learn the Cub Scout sign
3 Learn the Cub Scout salute

This should take you just a few minutes to do. It's so easy that I'm going to go ahead and order the totems for the kids to hand out at the next Pack meeting.

    2: Required Achievements

There are 15 achievements that fall into three categories:

Family Activities - you do these with your cub (they earn white beads)
    1 Do a chore
    2 Look at a map
    3 Fire drill, getting found
4 Each family member talks about their day at meal
    5 Watch weather

Den Activities - we do these as a den (orange beads)
    1 Make a family scrapbook
2 Pledge of allegiance, color guard (we'll do this at a regular den meeting)
3 Make a food guide pyramid
    4 Play "telephone"
5 Make a leaf rubbing (we can do this at the "rain or shine" hike on Dec. 16)

Go See It Activities - can be done together as a den or separately (black beads)
1 Go to a library, museum (I suggest you do this with your cub)
2 Go to police or fire station
3 Learn rules, go to sports game
4 Visit television station, radio station, newspaper office
5 Take a hike (we'll do this at the den "rain or shine" hike on Dec. 16)

After they get all 15 beads they get a Tiger badge.

    3: Elective Achievements

There are 50 optional or "elective" achievements that your Tiger cub can earn. For each 10 completed achievements, they get a Tiger Track bead. See the Tiger Book, pages 27-138. Many of these are easy, most are fun - some of them are things you're probably doing already.

    4: Bobcat Achievements

There are 8 simple achievements the Tiger cub needs to complete before they can advance to the next level, which is Wolf. See pages 143-149. You can tackle these anytime.

    ***TRACKING ACHIEVEMENTS***

I've posted a spreadsheet here where you can track your Tiger's achievements. Update it, and email it to me when there are changes, and I'll update the master file.

    ***DEN MEETINGS***

I propose we hold our first Den Meeting at Roundtable Pizza on Monday, November 27 at 6PM (after Thanksgiving). There we can knock out these achievements:

    - Review Tiger Cub Belt Totem Achievements
    - 1 Make a family scrapbook (we'll supply binders, paper, etc.)
    - 3 Make a food guide pyramid (if this isn't already covered at school)
    - 4 Play "telephone"
    - Get a start on the Bobcat Achievements

***PLEASE RSVP*** and let me know if you can make it to the November 27 Den Meeting.

    ***FUTURE GO SEE IT EVENTS***

I need parent volunteers to help schedule and organize the following "Go See It" activities, which we can do *AFTER* the Holidays!

2 Go to police or fire station
3 Learn rules, go to sports game (e.g. Tam High basketball)
4 Visit television station, radio station, newspaper office

Please let me know if you can help! I can talk more about this at our Den Meeting.

    Thanks!

    Dave

    Tigers

    Upcoming Tiger Events

    Hey everybody,

The Tigers have a lot going on. Here is info on some upcoming events:

    ***FOOD DRIVE***

We dropped off bags at Pickleweed and Mill Creek Meadows. It was a great location - no streets or traffic - and a tire swing for a little R&R at the end. The boys had a great time. Thanks to Miles Rubens, Casey Murray, and Jonny LaDuke!!

Next Saturday, November 18 is when we pick up the contributed food. We'll meet in front of Mill Creek Meadows, the brown shingle townhouses across Miller from Tam High Track, at 10AM. Please bring a red wagon if you have one. Also, once we've gathered all the food, we might need a little help driving it to the drop off point.

It shouldn't take more than about an hour. Please RSVP (whether or not you're coming).

    ***ARCTIC ADVENTURE***

This is going to be a blast - luxury "camping" at the Ibach Lodge in the Sierras, at 5,100 feet elevation. The lodge accommodates up to 40 people in bunk beds...a full kitchen, dining hall and huge fireplace are among the amenities.

An adult must accompany each Scout unless otherwise arranged. Additional family members may attend. Cost is $40.00 per person and includes Ibach Lodge rental and meals from Saturday breakfast through Sunday breakfast.

Reserve your spot by emailing Dave Lundgren, lodger@aol.com . This event will sell out.

For more information see this post.

    ***PRESIDENTIAL FITNESS***

We've started the presidential fitness challenge with some of the boys. They can keep working on all of the skills until February. Everybody gets a Participant Patch just for trying. If they are so inclined they can work on achieving National (above 50th percentile) or Presidential (above 85th percentile) levels of fitness.

On Saturday, November 18, there will be an opportunity for the boys to run a quarter, half, or mile run. Meet at Tam Track at 9. (I won't be there, but other parents will).

For more information see these guidelines.

I will keep the boys scores posted here. Update me as they make progress.

    Best,

    Dave
