Pack 34 call for volunteers

Pack 34 needs more parent volunteers!

Often parents will come up and remark about how smoothly things are run at at Pack meetings. We appreciate the compliments but you should also understand that like most baseball and soccer coaches, we're parents who get involved to help our kids and others and to provide fun activities to kids in our community.

With the bridging of more than 10 Webelos and three very active leaders we're expanding our leadership committee and you are all invited to join. I've broken down the positions below.

We can provide training and guidance for all of these positions and we try to have four meetings per year. You'll be providing a great service and your kids will appreciate their scouting experience that much more.

Please E-mail me back if you're interested...

Assistant Cubmaster (4 hours per month)
Help oversee all of the pack's activities.

Recruitment Chair (2 recruiting events in the fall plus paperwork)

Awards Chair (2 hours per month)
Monthly visit to Scout store to pick up awards and patches. Help den leaders track awards

Camping Chair (We average three campouts per year)
Lead in organizing Pack 34 Camping events. Choose dates. locations and activities, arrange itineraries, gain tour permits Plan menus and delegate food acquisition.

Pinewood Derby Chair (Plan and Manage Event)

Blue and Gold Dinner Chair (Plan and Manage Event)

Physical Fitness Chair (2 hours per month Oct. to Feb.)
Manage the physical fitness awards tracking.

Track me or one of the other den leaders down tomorrow night or call me at three zero two - two nine eight eight.

Yours in Scouting,

Will

Tiger Cubs Pack 34 Fire House Visit

Marianne Shine writes:

We had a great visit today at the Fire Station. First of all I would like to thank the parents who helped out with driving and bringing drinks, Lisa Baldwin, Tina Jennings, Mary Anne Daly and Claudine Murray for a fabulous snack complete with fire house stickers and pencils.
P3230038

When we got to the station the trucks were gone. Turns out the fire fighters were putting out a car fire. So Tina walked us over to the bank where she works and taught the Cubs about banking. They also managed to sell a few See's candy bars in the process. Way to go with picking up the financial skills.

P3230039

Then it was back over to the fire station where Captain Mike St John and Rodriguez where hot and sweaty from their rescue still wearing their "turn out" gear. They showed us two different trucks. They even hooked one of the scouts up to an EKG machine for a demonstration on heart rates and first aid. The visit ended with a rope and pulley demonstration. This was a terrific and educational outing for all. We really missed you guys that had other commitments. Catch ya next time.

Invitation to Troop 1

Pack 34 Webelos II and Parents:

We hope all the 2nd year Webelos from Pack 34 are considering bridging into Mill Valley Boy Scout Troop One. Our bridging is on Thursday, April 26.

We encourage you to visit Troop One for at least one Thursday night meeting. Our Troop meetings are 7:30 to 9:00 at Scout Hall.

This Thursday, March 22, the Pack One Webelos II will be visiting. If you would like to meet some other potential new Scouts please come. If another Thursday works better, please let me know so we can be ready to answer any questions you may have.

We will be having meetings March 29, April 5, and April 19. We will not have a meeting April 12 due to Spring Break for the Mill Valley Schools.

Prior to bridging, we will have a packet of information for you including the application form. We can mail these to you if you provide your address at the meeting or forward your address by e-mail.

Please do not hesitate to call myself or any of the Pack One leaders if you have any questions. We look forward to welcoming you to Troop One

Upcoming Tiger Events

Tiger parents,

Upcoming Tiger Dates:

***March 23, 3:30PM: Tiger Cub firehouse visit is this Friday - Marianne Shine is making it happen!

March 24, 12PM: Candy Sales

March 28, 7PM at Mill Valley Golf Course: Pack Meeting, Awards, and Arrow of Light Ceremony

***April 27th, 4:30PM at Tam High: Baseball Game - Tom Baldwin is making it happen!

(Events marked with *** are part of the required "Go See It" achievements.

Also, a brief update on candy sales....

Wow! We have some natural born Tiger salesmen in our den. Jordan, Derek and Jonny held their own last week in front of Mill Valley Market - alongside girl scouts selling cookies and a bakery giving away free samples. (The person operating the bakery stand wound up buying three chocolate bars.)

All three boys sold out!

It was great to see the boys in action, zeroing in on prospects, blocking the entrance to Mill Valley Market, sharpening used-car-salesmen pressure tactics... kind of like a pint-sized Glengarry Glen Ross... hey... just kidding!

Seriously, I was reminded what a really great activity this is. The boys learned how to make eye contact, speak to adults, make change, handle rejection without getting upset, experience generosity and thank people for it - they were great.

Next week we are stationed at Safeway on Camino Alto/Miller at 12PM, after the Little League Parade. Please consider bringing your Tiger - but be sure to get candy from Will or Steph - we're running out. Also, let me know if you're coming.

Remember - 3 boxes, and the boy earns a fishing rod & reel. Jordan, Derek & Jonny are on their way...

Best,

Dave

Baseball Game: April 27th, 4:30PM, Tam High

Dear Tiger Parents:

Spring is upon us and that means our National Pastime is coming into full swing. MVLL Opening Day is this Saturday and High School baseball has already begun. The Tiger Pack is planning a baseball outing to a Tam High Baseball game. Redwood will be playing @ Tam High on Friday April 27th 4:30pm. This should be a great time for the Tiger Cubs and their family. As we get closer to the event, I will let you know what we will be doing about dinner, along with what to bring. Please put it on your calendar and as we get closer to the date I will be asking for RSVP's.

All the Best,

Tom

Cub Scout Day Camp

Hey Pack 34 Parents,

In our house we're trying to plan our summer and I want to encourage all scouts to attend at least one week of Cub Scout Day Camp. Besides having a ton of fun boys earn belt loops and other valuable scout advancement skills.

It is a very well run program at Camp Tamarancho in Fairfax (don't worry a bus picks them up at Strawberry Village).

It is run for three weeks: 6/25 - 6/29, 7/23 - 7/27, 8/14 - 8/18 and the forms are attached.

Yours in Scouting,

Will

Pinewood Derby Schedule

Hey Pack 34 Parents,

Below are the times and tips for the Pinewood Derby.

Saturday March 10, Pinewood Derby Car Drop Off, Scout Hall, 4pm to 6pm
This is the official race car drop off. See below for tips.

Sunday March 11, Pinewood Derby Race! Scout Hall. 12 noon to 2:30 pm The race is on!

Bring well-fed scouts in uniform to the race. Popcorn and water will be provided at the race.

To maximize fun for Scouts, Parents and Leaders alike during both Pinewood Weigh-In and the Pinewood Derby, please try to be sure your cars meet all the rules before Weigh-In. Rules came in the box with your car, please read them and remember:

Top Ten Tips for Pinewood Derby Cars:

  1. Weight not over 5.0 oz. Best to get close (4.90 oz.) rather than over. The mailroom at work, US Post offices, meat departments at supermarkets and the package store near Baskin Robbins are all places where you can pre-weigh your car.
  2. Length not over 7". This is overall tip-to tail, so nothing can be beyond this length.
  3. Width not over 2 3/4". Again, an overall figure. Nothing wider.
  4. Width between wheels not under 1 3/4". Nothing tighter...it won't fit over the track.
  5. Bottom clearance between car and track not under 3/8"...careful, if you're adding weights to your car bottom.
  6. All four wheels must contact the track, and turn freely. Check this on a horizontal flat surface, such as a smooth kitchen counter or cutting board.
  7. Wheels must be unmodified, unpainted etc....you can remove any "burrs" left from molding, but basically, they should be close to as they came in the box. No extra holes, knife-edge profiles etc.. If you lost a wheel, or an axle, the Scout Store in San Rafael has more.
  8. Keep the nose blunt, not pointy (best to have a 1/2" surface or bigger).
  9. Make it solid & dry...cars whose pieces are falling off, or still have wet paint/glue, may be disqualified despite meeting the other criteria.
  10. No propulsion/power sources, magnets, no liquid lubricants of any kind.
It's better to get it right the first time than to have to hack your car under pressure, in Scout Hall, if it fails Weigh-In. This is especially true if someone is bringing your Scout's car to Weigh-In for you.

If you have any questions not covered by these rules, ask your Den Leader, who will find you the answer if they don't know themselves...and if in doubt, "Be Prepared"!

Please remember that Pinewood Derby is a parent and child activity. It's a great opportunity to teach scouts about tools, safety, aerodynamics, patience, fun and honor.

We will have prizes for the top 3 in each group, the most creative cars will receive recognition plus everyone will receive a participant patch.

Yours in Scouting,

Will
