White Water Rafting Trip: A Roaring, Raging, Soaking Success!

The Cub Scouts and their families had a blast rafting the South Fork of the American River this past weekend!

Check out these great photos!

(If you have any additional photos, please send them in.)

Kudos and thanks to Cap'n Joe Hiti for pulling it all together! And to the many families who helped out. We made some great memories for our boys.

Road Construction: Detour in Raft Trip directions

Pack 34 Rafters,

This just in... road construction has introduced a detour in the directions to the rafting trip. Attached are the new directions*. All drivers, please take note.

We are a resourceful bunch, and I know any of us who miss this communication will eventually get there, even by the old directions. However, to do so, you might have to stop and ask directions from some guy in a gas station. Clearly, that would be Wrong.

Please... Be Prepared, print these out, and call anyone that you know is driving, to be sure they get the word.

Yours In Scouting,

Dave Lundgren

mobile: four zero eight - six eight seven - two one one seven
walkie talkie: channel 3, subchannel 4

*Note 8/25/2005 date... revised last night! We stumbled across this, checking on final details with WhiteWater Voyages. You're getting this notification just after we learned of the change. Thanks for your patience!

  • Waterproof camera & film

White Water Rafting Trip and Camping Details

Ahoy Rafters,

We have just over two weeks before we're taming the white water on the South Fork of the American River.

Please look for your name below. An outing this size takes a group effort so we've delegated various tasks. We all know the more you participate, the more you feel connected to the group. Thank you in advance.

Attached is a release form provided by Whitewater Voyages that needs to be filled out by each family. Please bring it with you.

Important note from Kerry Huffman:
As many of you know, my son has a life threatening peanut allergy. So, please do not bring any peanuts, or products with peanuts (Snickers candy bars..). Additionally, if you wouldn't mind reading the ingredients of the products you bring to make sure there are no peanut oil or peanut flour in them. I thank you in advance for your understanding.

When:
Arrive Saturday 2pm, August 27
Raft Sunday 10am - 3pm, August 28

Where:
See attached 3 page map (Thank you Dave Lundgren)
Park in main parking area and check in at Camp store, see map on page 3. Bring gear down hill to beach and set up camp. Apparently they have carts we can use to haul your things to the camping area. It's only about 100 yards. We will be camping at the "Sandy Beach" area. See map on page 3.

Car pooling:
Please organize your own transportation

Camp site info:
Flat sandy dirt beach area next to river. Blackberry bushes close by. This is the largest camp site they have and usually will hold up to 45 people. Our group is 58 people. Bring your own tent and sleeping gear. If you have a large, tent please share with other families. Remember the BSA policy, a Scout can not sleep in a tent with another adult unless his parent is present. Bring chairs. Since the fire danger is "Very High" now, no fires will be allowed. We will be able to bring up self contained propane stoves and grills.

Activities:
(Duncan to organize) The camp itself has a lot to do. Giant chess and checkers, Air hockey, ping pong, volleyball, horse shoes, badminton, croquet, et. The kids will be able to participate in the activities around the camp using the buddy system.

Buddy System:
Will Cannell to organize.

Purchase food:
(Joe and Israel to make Costco run) Pack will provide all food and drink.

Dinner:
(Chef's: John Smeltzer, Fred Sherman, Rick Craig) Dinner ready around 6pm. Hot dogs and sausages, chips, can corn, condiments, 5 gallon tank of lemonade.

Important:
Please have your scout bring his mess kit and silverware. If he doesn't have one, you should buy one at the scout store or REI. This is a great time for him to learn how to put it together, use it, and clean it after eating.

Dinner Clean up:
Abram, Mike Shine Dave Lundgren will supply the three tubs of cleaning solutions.

Desert:
S'mores, pack will purchase the items. Greg Stephens and Bob Bowyer, round up a bunch of skewers.

Night time story, joke, and riddle telling:
Dave LaDuke to organize. Anyone can bring their favorite joke, story, or riddle to tell all.

Breakfast:
7am Cereal, milk, OJ, fruit, coffee Dave Marquis, Jeff Musser, Kevin Mannix

Breakfast clean up:
Dave Thelander, Tom Rosenfield

Sunday lunch provided on the river by the raft company.

Rafting photo:
"Hot Shot Images" will be taking photos of us when we're breaking through the white water. Make sure your holding on to the paddle and not the rope on the side of the raft. It looks better. The pack will provide one (1) 8x10 photo for each family.

Pack up camp:
We should pack up camp and load our cars after breakfast. When we come back from rafting (3-4pm or so) we can just get in our cars and head home.

Equipment:

  • Coolers - Joe, Dave Lundgren, Israel, and more. Water jugs - we need water tanks, the camp doesn't have drinking water.
  • Propane grill - Joe, Dave Lundgren, Dave LaDuke. Need charcoal grill for S'mores.
  • Coffee pots - Dave Lundgren, Israel, need more?
  • Tables - Steve Bouchard - Bring 4 tables from Scout Hall. Our camp area doesn't have tables.
  • Utensils (tongs, ladle, big spoon, et.) - Dave Lundgren, Anthony Zanze

Raft assignments:
Kerry Huffman to assign people to their rafts.

What to bring for Rafting:

  • Swimsuit or shorts
  • Protective Footwear
  • Tennis shoes that lace tightly; wetsuit booties; rugged sandals that securely strap (e.g., Tevas, Alps.) Bare feet and thongs are not safe!
  • Strap to secure sunglasses/eyeglasses
  • Waterproof sunscreen with high SPF Do not apply sunscreen to forehead…it will run into your eyes when you get splashed with water…and hurt!
  • Hat or visor Chinstrap recommended for hats.

I was told that the raft company has life vests for the little kids not going rafting while their running around the camp.

That's all I have for now.

Captain Joe

Pack 34 Scout activities in September

Hey Pack 34 parents,

Instead of receiving these e-mails from your den leader, I as Cubmaster will be sending out notices regarding our many pack events. If you don't want to receive these or you want to change your address please shoot me back an e-mail. If there are den level notices you will receive those from your den leader.

As back to school approaches so does a new year of Pack 34 fun. We've got a lot of great new plans plus the traditional activities that you know and love.

The full schedule for the year will be given out at the first pack meeting but I also want you to mark your calendars for these activities in September.

Flagraising in honor of Sept. 11, Friday Sept. 9, 8:15 am. Park School flagpole
Scouts should wear their uniform to school. They will receive a segment patch for participating.

Pack Meeting, Wednesday Sept. 14, 7 pm at Scout Hall
Pizza party! Bring a new or returning scout! We will welcome new scouts and give out awards to our returning scouts. If you know a boy in grades 1-5 who attends Park School or one of the private schools in the area who wants to join Pack 34 this is the night for them to join.

Luminaries Service Project, Sept. 24, Time TBD , MLK Field, Sausalito
Our service project is placing hundreds of candles around the track during the Cancer Society's Relay for Life. This is very moving and also fun for the scouts.

I'll try to keep you apprised of the latest plans so you get these events on your calendars.

Yours in Scouting,

Will
