MV Memorial Day Parade: Thirsty Cubs!

Pack 34 needs two families to bring their red wagons and coolers filled with water bottles for the scouts in the parade.  In years past, it has been hot and the scouts have needed water to make it through the parade.

Pls let Israel know if you can help out Pack 34.

Thank you,

Raft trip reschedule, High water on the American River

I was informed Saturday that due to the above normal precipitation in the Sierra's this past winter the dam operators will be forced to increase the water flow in May, June, and July. This increases the water level and speed of the American River. White Water Voyages (our raft company) has decided for safety concerns, to increase the age limit for the next couple of months up to 10 years old. This obviously won't work for us but am grateful for the raft companies concern for our safety.

Not to worry. This just requires a little more patience. I rescheduled the trip for August 27 and 28. This is the first weekend the kids are back to school. The plan will be the same as before, just different dates. I was assured the water levels will be receded by August and the river will be safe for all.

Any Scout family that couldn't make the first date is welcome to join us in August. If a family that has signed up for the raft trip in June can't make the August trip, they can get a full refund. Just tell me by June 1st.

Cancel our pre-rafting meeting this Wednesday at the deuce. We will reschedule in August.

Please make sure signed up families get notified.

Thank you,

Joe Hiti

Pack 34 BB Gun Range trip, Camp Tamarancho, 6.5.05, Sunday, 1-3 pm

Hey Scouts,

Have you ever had a dream about shooting a BB gun at targets to your heart's content?  Thought so.  Well your dream has come true!

On Sunday, June 5th, from 1-3 pm, Pack 34 has reserved the BB Gun Range at Camp Tamarancho.  Our own Pack 34 Safety Officers Dave LaDuke, Joe Hiti, and myself will be showing scouts how to use the BB guns/rifles safely and with accuracy.

WHERE TO MEET: TBA

NEEDED:
Depending on the turn out, we will need parents to drive.

WHAT TO BRING:
(1) Bring clear plastic containers (gallon or quart milk containers are the best);
(2) food dye (not red).  At the range, we can fill the containers with water and color with dye; they make great targets.
(3) Any kind of target, but it cannot resemble or depict, in any way, an animal or human.

SAFETY NOTES:
(1) Safety is paramount!  The safety officers will not tolerate any behavior that could jeopardize the safety on any scout.  Unsafe kids, unfortunately, will have to be removed from the Range.
(2) All parents must abide by the same guidelines as the scouts.  Kids learn best by example.

RSVP:

This is going to be fun.  I hope you can make it.

Thank you,

Israel

Memorial Day Weekend Events

Saturday, May 28th, 9 a.m. -- Flag Planting, San Francisco National Cemetery (Presidio)

Monday, May 30th, TBA -- Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade

Hey Webelos! (I like the sound of that!)

Two great events are scheduled over Memorial Day weekend. Saturday's Flag Planting is one of our most meaningful scouting events. As you probably remember, the National Cemetery covered with American flags truly makes us feel we are on hallowed ground. It is a moving experience that scouts and their parents can share together.

On Monday, we get to ride our razors or scooters in the well-orchestrated (just kidding) MV parade. Scouts, in uniform, should bring their scooters and a bag of candy they can pummel (I mean share with) the crowd. The pack needs two families to bring their wagons filled with water bottles for the scouts; some years have been pretty hot.

These two events are great scout traditions that you don't want to miss. Please call me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Israel

Boy Behavior 101

Here is an interesting link from Mill Valley Pack One Cubmeister Terry Grant.

As Terry says:

"This link has some, as usual, corny stuff... BUT it also has some great take-aways on managing boy behavior in your den meetings… I actually find myself re-reading it about once a month!"

Enjoy.

Presidio Flag Ceremony

Greetings from Terry Grant of Mill Valley Pack One!

Time for my FAVORITE cub scout activity of the year -- the Memorial Day Flag Ceremony at the Presidio on Saturday, May 28th at 9 am. Couple of Highlights:

  1. Wear rubber boots/shoes as the grass is usually damp
  2. It only takes about 45 minutes to cover the whole cemetery which is an amazing thing unto itself
  3. We begin with a Park Service presentation about what Memorial Day means, and how it's different than Veteran's Day
  4. There are very old graves in the cemetery - dating back to the Spanish American conflict
  5. Refreshments afterwards, and a patch commemorating the event.
  6. There is also free attendance at the Exploratorium for all Cub Scouts in Uniform the day of the Ceremony. Also see link below.

As for me, I like to share with my boys that although I am personally against this War with Iraq (and most wars), that we should be thankful for the American's who serve our country and who have died in arm's way. We should also be mindful that our community includes many people whose lives have been affected by war in many ways. We should always be respectful on Memorial Day.

Regarding directions, the map is hyperlinked below for those who don't know where the cemetery is. Basic directions are:

  1. Exit right immediately after the toll booth of the Golden Gate Bridge (heading into the city from Marin)
  2. Go about 100 yards slightly uphill past a parking lot until you come to a stop sign. (3 way)
  3. Turn left and proceed downhill on Lincoln Ave which takes you under Highway 1
  4. You are now heading downhill into the Presidio
  5. Lincoln Ave winds around 5-6 bends before your come directly to the Cemetery.
  6. Don't turn in ... you have to find parking around the entrance, and over by the enlisted quarters (easy to find)

I would highly recommend that families feed their kids prior to bringing them to the bridging on Friday.  No food will be served at the pool, so we don't want to have low blood sugar melt downs.

Other Notes

- I have ordered the Presidio patches, so we are covered for that event.

Den Leaders: Segments for May 13 meeting

There are no segments for this meeting.

But, there is a family fiesta patch for each boy that went there.

Also, make sure all achievements have been met.  You will need to order rank badges and parent pins via Tish.  Tish may already have all the pins, but, just in case, send her the total needed.

Also, each den member should have his new rank scarf for the bridging.  The parent will put it on the boy during the ceremony.   Scarf's are not funded by the pack, so you will need to pick it up before next friday.  Also, each boy should wear his swimming trunks along with his scout shirt.

May 13 is the last meeting of the year, it should be a great one!
