Presidio Flag Ceremony

Greetings from Terry Grant of Mill Valley Pack One!

Time for my FAVORITE cub scout activity of the year -- the Memorial Day Flag Ceremony at the Presidio on Saturday, May 28th at 9 am. Couple of Highlights:

  1. Wear rubber boots/shoes as the grass is usually damp
  2. It only takes about 45 minutes to cover the whole cemetery which is an amazing thing unto itself
  3. We begin with a Park Service presentation about what Memorial Day means, and how it's different than Veteran's Day
  4. There are very old graves in the cemetery - dating back to the Spanish American conflict
  5. Refreshments afterwards, and a patch commemorating the event.
  6. There is also free attendance at the Exploratorium for all Cub Scouts in Uniform the day of the Ceremony. Also see link below.

As for me, I like to share with my boys that although I am personally against this War with Iraq (and most wars), that we should be thankful for the American's who serve our country and who have died in arm's way. We should also be mindful that our community includes many people whose lives have been affected by war in many ways. We should always be respectful on Memorial Day.

Regarding directions, the map is hyperlinked below for those who don't know where the cemetery is. Basic directions are:

  1. Exit right immediately after the toll booth of the Golden Gate Bridge (heading into the city from Marin)
  2. Go about 100 yards slightly uphill past a parking lot until you come to a stop sign. (3 way)
  3. Turn left and proceed downhill on Lincoln Ave which takes you under Highway 1
  4. You are now heading downhill into the Presidio
  5. Lincoln Ave winds around 5-6 bends before your come directly to the Cemetery.
  6. Don't turn in ... you have to find parking around the entrance, and over by the enlisted quarters (easy to find)
