The race shall begin at 4:00 PM starting with the Tiger Cubs, and followed by the Wolves, Bears and Webelos I and II. When all Cub Scout races are finished, all friends and family members are invited to participate in an “Open Category Race”. “Open Race” cars need not be registered in advance and race rules are relaxed: No car may emit exhaust fumes!
All Pinewood Derby Cars are required to be inspected and officially entered in advance in order to participate. Prior to entry, each car will be weighed and inspected to ensure that all rules have been followed, and it conforms to the written specifications. Race officials will take possession of all race cars and keep them secured until the race. All cars will be returned immediately following the race.
Cub Scouts need not be present to enter their car, nor be present during the race. However, race cars often need last minute repairs in order to pass inspection. Therefore it is recommended that the Scout, or his “engineer” be present to enter the car.
Cub Scouts will race their Pinewood Derby cars against other Cub Scouts of the same rank in each Pack. Trophies will be awarded to the first place finisher in Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelo I and II. Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers of each rank. The winner in each rank is invited to participate in the Marin Council Pinewood Derby Race, held during the 4th of July weekend, at the Marin County Fair.
This is a race for the fastest car. However, Scouts are encouraged to design and build impressive and creative cars. Special prizes will be awarded for Best Use of Color, Best Looking, “Shake, Rattle & Roll, Best “All Scout Built”, and the “Cubmaster’s Favorite”.
Tasty food and cold beverages will be available for sale on race day. Proceeds from the snack bar will help support the race expenses. So please come hungry!
